Kannagi

Kannagi is one of the "paavam" characters of Tamil. She was so nice that she even readily accepted a husband who cheated on her. All in the name of being a "patthini". Some soul must've said "A patthini always forgives her husband, no matter how grave his mistake is". The true patthini she was, she did the same. There ends her greatness, if you ask me. After all the turn of events, she was angry with the king who killed her husband on false charges and to avenge him, she burnt the whole of Madurai with her curse. Madurai is the capital of "true" Tamil. And she burnt THAT city. This is a story.

But what exactly did Kannagi do to deserve the respect of all tamilians born anywhere in the world I don't know. She is a charcter you may or may not like. But how is that like or dislike connected to your love for tamil or tamilians? Say this loud and you'd be termed an anti-tamil person. How is her statue more important than any other statue in Marina? After Jayalalithaa decided to remove her statue, suddenly, her statue became more important than the rest. Apparently, when TN's current CM saw her statue covered with dust-bunnies, he cried.

Dear CM, there are thousands of people in TN who are dying without proper medical care, dying because of riots in the name of (political)parties and all, please spare a thought/tear for them. These people are alive unlike this statue.

Is that me that typed all this? Whats with me?

Kallaanalum kanavan, pullanalum purushan :)
Whether mythical or not, her character deserves respect for it drew moral boundaries for a tamil woman.
Just like some customs dont make sense to us now, her acts 2000 years back doesnt make sense to us. May be it made sense then.
who knows?

Is she even Tamil. Wasn't she from Mallu land - that is how she was shown in Shyam Benegal's "Discovery of India" - in white and gold with a Mohini attam dancer's kondai.

I think she came over to TN just to burn down Madurai :-).

*Barath...on a serious note, the literary value of Ilango's work in undoubtablly great. But that doesnt mean we cannot critize the fictious characters he created.

correct...we can.

Tilo, is she mallu? wow! that gives a twist. So the regional fights started way earlier than I thought. A Mallu woman burning a tamil capital.:-)
Barath and Prabhu, burning down a city doesn't make sense to some of us now. Agree. But that shouldn't take away the right from any of us to make a choice between liking or disliking that character.
Ashok - "my city"...adi sakka!:-)
Kaps, thats true. Uninstalling and re-nstalling a statue is the easiest thing to do. Thats why 2 "wise" people are indulging in that.
I, no points for guessing why you made that comment, which is so unrelated to the issue.
Barath, as an aside, wanna share with you the story I heard sometime ago. Apparently, when Sita asked lakshmana to go and look out for Rama, who went in search of the deer, Lakshmana refused as he was worried for Sita's safety and knew nobody could harm his brother. Sita, in an attempt to force him to leave said "You have feelings for me and thats why you are refusing to go". And those words "thee pol suttadhu" for Lakshmana. Rama wanted to teach her a lesson and wanted her to realize how the "thee sutta" feeling was. So he asked her to walk on fire. This may or maynot be true but thought you might be interested in this side story.
TTM, you an MGR fan?
D the D, thanks for the link. Will check that out.
Rajesh, yeah Vijayakumari as usual over-acted but when I think Kannagi, I can only picturise Kannambal.

This is absurd.kannagi is a அக்மார்க் தமிழ் பொண்ணு.Her birth place:kaaviripoom pattinam.
Her father was a Wealthy merchant in KP.But there is a connection between kerala and kannagi.Let me explain..
after the destruction of madurai, she went to kerala(via kaniyakumari).she was stopped at attukal.those people made a temple for her.And they consider that as the sabarimala of women.every year they celebrate a 10 days festival for kannagi. You can find a kannagi temple in srilanka also.
Deepa,
The story was interesting.I never heard of this story.does it come under "kamba ramayana"?.Im searching abt the story.
so you feel the logical equation is solved!! :)
Hari,
அந்த ஊருக்கு நல்லது பண்ணின தேவருக்குதான் சிலை வைப்பாங்க.ஊர எரிச்ச கண்ணகிக்கு அந்த ஊர்ல சிலை வைப்பாங்கன்னு எப்படி எதிர்பார்க்க முடியும்?(இன்னும் கூட அஷோக் கோவமா இருக்காரு).But Chennai is the most perfect place for her statue.Coz the theme of the story is..
"அரசியல் பிழைத்தோர்க்கு அறம் கூற்றாகும்"
அதாவது நீதி தவறி ஆட்சி பண்ணினா ,கண்டிப்பா ஆப்பு உண்டுன்னு அர்த்தம்
ஓரு சாமனியனின் சக்தியின் அடையாளம்னு கூட சொல்லலாம்.Hence that statue should be in our political capital.
