Lata

I am one of those people that used to like Lata of yesteryears but can't stand her anymore. Not just her voice, the person called Lata irritates me to no end. By now everyone knows about the fly-over drama that involves her. Read uptown-girl's article on that. Its very interesting.
Some people think its a rule in India to like, adore and worship Lata Mangeshkar and such souls have also berated this girl in her comments section. Read that too to have more fun.

That post was logical, but I am not able to stand the comments there:)

When I read the news about Lata, I thought, "Ok leave...big diff"!

On a serious note, this queen bee kinda behaviour from Lata is totally meaningless. Agreed that she has been a great citizen of India, and has made us all proud...but she is not the only one there...Ms.Lata, take a look at me! Well, they built a flyover just outside my house on TTK road in Chennai, and I left Chennai quietly...;) Did it make news?! Now, what's the big deal with you? Leave if you want to...

Lata's voice was her best up until she sang for Madhuri Dixit. After hearing her in Pukar, and especially in Veer zaara - ohmygod! People should know when to quit - at the helm.

She is a great singer no doubt but that does not mean she can obstruct something like this. It sounds really silly. The reader's comments sound really crazy. Unfortunately this is what fanaticism is all about...I am very sure if such a situation in TN arises requiring Rajinikanth to shift his Poes Garden Residence, people would go to the extent of "Unnaivirudham", "Violence" and what not...

No offense to Rajini (I like his movies)but giving this example to say to what extent these fans go...thats a real sad thing :(

Let me sing this song before i start posting a comment on Lata didi.. This song is from the film Parasakthi and dedicated for my 'wonderful', 'selfless' didi..."Kaaaakaaa kaaaa..kaaa kaaa kaaaaa"

Lata kaakkaa, i mean Lata 'didi' = I had worked with her around 8 years and she is THE most insecure singer around.
This was an ensemble rendition she was part of with stalwarts like Balamuralikrishna, Pt.Bhimsen Joshi, S P B, D K Pattammal etc.
There was also this young 16 yeard old Kaushiki Chakroborthy whose rendition we had recorded, as part of the piece.Kaushiki has a fantastic voice.
'Didi' heard the entire piece and her first reaction was "Oh ladki hein na jo 'xyz...' line gaayi, woh utni acchi nahin hein.. pronounciation be teekh nahin hein" [the girl who has sung that 'xyz..' line hasnt sung well, the pronounciation is not good].
I was shocked. We chose that little girl for her amazing talent and voice and thanks to 70 year old Peddar road kumari's interference, we had to remove Kaushiki's voice and replace it with someone else's... what more can i say? kaaa kaaa kaaa

Deepz, you know who I am ;-)

ahh... finally, someone who hates Lata as well. I cannot stand her voice these days. It sounds like someone pretending to sing like a kid. Don't these movie-makers see it? I think the slide started as early as DDLJ. And she still gets the best songs in the industry and screws them up. Someone's gotta tell her enough is enough!

lata = ka ka

Aiyo! My first memory of listening to Lata was that her voice pierced my ear drums. How shrill, I remember thinking. Over the years it has gone progressively worse and Lata kezhavi has joined the pantheon of sacred cows in India.

ka ka Hater, I love the way you hate her with a passion. And you thought I wont recognise you?!;-) I had you in mind when I wrote this actually.
Ammani, I request you to listen to the song she has sung in Rang De Basanti. You'll hate ARR for making her sing that.
Join the gang AAT. And I know how much you hate her because she sings "hindi" songs.;-)
Casement..lol. So Alwarpettai aala?
Rads and Karthik, what are you guys talking about? You both are being too kind. Lata was past her prime even during Chandni (SriDevi)
Ajay, D The D and Anusha, couldn't agree more with you guys.
Anon, I enjoyed reading the comments too.funny right?:-)
Mahadevan, I liked that quote. thanks.

solrada ellam sollittu 'akka' ada deny vera pandradu.

Earlier in 2001, when the Mangeshkar sisters protested against the Peddar road flyover, the CM&the rest of the mumbai junta namaskaram-ed her. Now when she says "I will leave mumbai if the flyover happens" , Mumbai asks "May we help you pack your bags, Ma'am?"
ha ha ha.. i am loving it!

Ammani, the song in Rang de basanti goes "Luka chuppi bohut hui.." .. dont waste time listening to her. Nee fone pannumbodu naane paadi kataren..kaaka.. i mean, akka style-la. It took rahman one full week to repair her voice, digitally , i am told.

In the early 90s, I found it such a mismatch that Lata sang for Bhagyashree in "Maine Pyar Kiya" and Anuradha Poudwal for Anu Agrawal in 'Aashique'!!

I was in mumbai in 2001 when Asha it was who made a big fuss about the Peddar Road flyover. Surprising that Lata joined the tirade.

Anyway its pointless and childish to bring in Lata's singing. How in the world is it related to her protest. Don't listen to it if you don't want to. How many of her gems in the 60s and 70s have you all actually bothered to listen? Chumma jumping into the bash-northie bandwagon after hear few songs in the 90s and 2Ks and dragging someone down in unrelated aspects just for the sake of badmouthing....

will u accept heroines from 60s to pair with todays heros?

Lata was great in her days...but,one has to accept that the voice too ages with time. That simple!

Other than The Slimes and its cousin Mid-Day, did any reliable news source corroborate the allegation?
Lata denies the statement.Take that blogosphere! Visit all the music stores(40% of songs are hers) from Bangalore to Boston and weep.

Here's a representative situation when it's good to have a second person look at things before they get published.

Always unfortunate when someone has to formally deny what is for the most part a rumour.

TTM, I am glad there is at least one person in this world that likes Lata. We oppose her singing prowess now and we oppose her threatening. Its not that we oppose her threatening because she is a bad singer. Now do you get the cause and effect? Everybody says they liked Lata's voice but not anymore. Whats wrong with that statement? Please elucidate.
ka ka hater.....lol. Can sense the Mumbaiyya veruppu. ;-)

Deepa,
Surely good singers(and composers) know when it's time to leave. Those things are completely out of our control. Most of the cases, they are compelled to sing for a fledgling or failing composer(who badly wants the singer's name on his resume) or because a composer is comfortable with her(I-Raja with Janaki though she had lost it long back). It's not their fault in most cases. Take-it-or-leave-it is the best thing we end-users can do.

I know all about Lata's shenanigans(blocking Vani, rivalry with Asha - watch Saaz-1997). Nothing new, even SPB forced composers to block newcomers. Vani is my all-time fave singer, but lets not get into all that - LM got 30K+ songs, mosquito-squeaks or not. Nobody would have cared if a non-entity had opposed the flyover :)

Begin Troll:
hehe, Mumbai needs no self-defense as long as a particularly faithful state keeps begging a Mumbai-reject to be its CM and builds a temple for another mumbai-reject, both of whom wouldnt even have become 'extras' in bollywood. Veruppu or not, local talent in TN gets seruppu! Another proof that mumbai kicks butt ;)
End Troll

Lets agree to disagree on this :-P

Deepz

guess what? the best part was that in 2001, when the akka-thangai opposed the flyover, the first reason that they gave was:
"We WILL lose our voice because of pollution if the flyover comes up" "WILL lose"?
enakku confucious aa irukku. When something is already lost, how do you lose it again?

TTM's Troll //Veruppu or not, local talent in TN gets seruppu!//...
something i agree with wholeheartedly ;-(
Its a shame our kollywood runs shamelessly behind bollywood heroines and singers...

[ps:I hate Udit narayana singing in Tamil]

Another view on the flyover. I'm not saying this to *win* an "argument" or anything, just wondering how easy it is to support a flyover or Narmadha Bachao Andholan based on our like/dislike for LM or Arundhati Roy..Most things in life dont have easy answers. But lets not stop having opinions, nothing wrong in being human ;)

Blogger D LordLabak said...

Arre TTM yaar, we are not saying ki Lata wasn't talented. We just hate anyone with a holier than thou attitude. You understand a? Lets not make this a regional issue, that was hardly the tone of this argument. As you say, lets agree to disagree.
Ashok, ARR makes Adnan Sami sing tamil song. It cant get any worse. I hate ARR for such experiments.

Lataji is the greatest female singer. And with age, anyone's voice can go bad.

Now that she is old, people are insulting her by all such stupid blogs. Everyone has a right to protest if one feels that his/her privacy and peace of mind will be disturbed.

Would all you Lata - Haters (including Mr Kaka who claims some crap incident. Were you the banjo player in that ?), if the govt were to build a road/airport or any thing which will mean lots of traffic around your home...would you Lata-Haters (Morons) clap and donate money for the construction ?

Give an Indian a morning cup of tea and the newspaper and he/she will have a grand opinion about everything.
