Equal pay

From this year onwards Wimbledon, like the US open, pays both the men and women players equally. As a woman, I am supposed to feel happy about the development and all. Venus Williams thanked Billie Jean King during the award ceremony for pushing this rule. But if women cant play 5 sets like the men, why should they get the same pay? Wouldn't no one have asked this question? After watching the women's finals, the one-sided, easy and boring game, I am sure the men playing the game at Wimbledon would've thought its gross injustice. I feel that way while I am watching the men's finals' fist set (7-6). 75 minutes!

One of the commentators (today) said that the price of a ticket for the men's final is £72 and £66 for the Women's final.

Sometimes, things are done to appease people. But in this case I believe it is fair to pay the women the same as men.

It is subtle.

The reason for the previously lower prize money for women's tennis tournament, cannot completely be attributed playing a smaller number of sets. For example, a men's doubles game could have 5 sets, but it will have a lower prize money because it is not very popular. Because not many people watch it.

This is not the case with women's tournament. Even though it is only 3 sets, it is as popular as the men's tournament. Therefore, this is only fair.

I feel it is fair to pay both the sexes equally. Women players also undergo rigorous training and develop skill, notwithstanding the fact that they are asked to prove their worth in three sets. A Monica Sellers and Steffi Graff match used to be as thrilling as that of any of men's great. I rate Monica Sellers as the greatest woman player. Poor fate has cut short her Tennis Life.

if u assume men have superior physical strength, it kinda cancels out and makes sense.

Because the United States did it first, it has to make sense.

LKS, I knew 5 of them.
SK, rooted for Federer. He is solid. Heard about the ticket prices, why equal pay then?
kid, are you trying to score points with feminists?;-)
True Mahadevan Sir. Seles is just plain unlucky.
Rajesh, enna kutram kandeer? Elucidate.
Ananthoo and MT, glad you guys agree.:-)
I, this is what I'd call "flawed logic".

I agree to the fact that "Equal Pay" is not fair. However the deciding factor is not, the number of sets they play but how many people turn out and how much the audience is willing to cough up to watch these women run around.
If you go by number of sets, Roger Federer will be the least paid - he wins in straight sets mostly, u see.
Puriyardho?

That's the first question I asked my husband when he read out the headlines to me. Will the ladies also play 5 sets???

Apam Napat has the point I guess :) Let's forget the equal policy and look from the business point of view... It is very much fair to pay the women players equally.
